The Liebster Award

Liebster Award - ERIN FRED

I was having a more hectic day than usual, driving around LA for meetings & events when I happened to receive great news. One of them came in the form of a Facebook message that I really didn't expect after a month of blogging (humble brag lol). I am honored to announce that I have been nominated for the Liebster Award by fashion designer/blogger, Mary Jay from I Want That Look! It's an award given by other bloggers to recognize and support new, emerging bloggers in the writing community.

It really does mean a lot to receive some sort of recognition so early in the game because the daily grind in the blogging world as a newbie blogger can feel so overwhelming. I often deal with the feeling that I'll always be behind and that I'll never know "enough", though what does that even mean? The digital landscape is constantly changing and it's hard to keep up with every NEW app or online marketing strategy that you had to adopt YESTERDAY. However, I've learned so much more than I would've expected I'd learn in a month, and I know that with each passing day I'll only grow more knowledgeable and focused as a fashion blogger. I'm super grateful for every reader, fan, and follower that has joined me for the ride and I am so excited for what lies ahead in the coming months and years.

Q&A From I Want That Whole Look

1. What inspired you to start a blog?

After years of self-denial and only doing what I was told, I felt totally lost. I realized I had to be true to myself, but I had no idea where to start after having ignored myself for so long. It was either now or never, I thought. I decided to give myself a chance to embark on a creative journey to find myself in art and fashion, and I chose blogging as the medium to document that process. I knew that starting a blog would help me not only find the artist in myself, but to also find my voice again.

2. Is blogging your profession or your hobby?

It is one of my professions. I absolutely love blogging and it often feels like a hobby, but I still treat it as a business.

3. What is the one achievement you are proud of the most?

Out of all the small victories I've had in a short amount of time, I'm most proud of the fact that I followed through with my plans and made this blog a reality. I've not only learned so much about blogging and digital marketing, but I've also learned how to be vulnerable. I'm vulnerable each time I share my thoughts, allow myself to be photographed, and then proceed to share those photos to the world. In my vulnerability, I slowly learn more about myself, identify my strengths and weaknesses, and gain insight into what I can do to continuously improve. The most surprising part of all in my blogging journey is the fact that it has made me more comfortable in my own skin. I thought I'd feel like an outcast since I don't fit the mold of thin Asian fashion bloggers, but I've actually become more objective and accepting of my body, flaws and all.

4. What are you passionate about?

Above everything, I'm passionate about learning. One of the reasons why I married my husband was because he is just like me in that respect: we spend most of our free time studying subjects that interest us. Sure, sometimes we invest time in studying to add to our careers, but we learn mostly because we're genuinely passionate about it.

5. What are your career goals?

I aspire to be self-sufficient, to have the freedom to work when and where I want, and to have the influence and resources to empower others to reach their full potential.

6. Who do you admire and why?

You happened to ask this question when I'm currently reading Garance Dore's book, LOVE X STYLE X LIFE! I haven't finished the book yet, but I really admire the journey she had to take to get to where she's at, and her attitude toward life throughout that process. She taught herself fashion illustration through studying other illustrators' work and was always seeking criticism from others to improve her techniques. Oh, and she started that in her early 20's. Amazing to believe that that was one of the catalysts to her success, as well as the blog, which she began way before most people knew what a blog was.

7. In one sentence, describe who you are?

I am a Christian, creative #GirlBoss, blessed wife, and an un-apologetically loud, passionate and honest woman.

8. What is something you would hate to go without for a day?

My laptop! All my work and learning takes place on my laptop, so it'd be hard to stay productive without it. And... LET'S BE HONEST I'd be pretty bored without my Netflix & Hulu.

9. When was the last time you tried something new?

The only thing I can think of is when I completely changed my eating habits and switched to the ketogenic diet in December 2015. I lost a bit of weight, never have food coma, and stay full for longer periods of time. If you guys want to hear more about that, let me know in the comments below!

10. If you had all expenses paid where would you like to travel to?

This is so difficult to answer because I have so many countries on my list, but TBH I think I'd want to return to Brazil. I only had a chance to visit Rio de Janeiro and would love to visit other areas like Bahia, Sao Paulo, and Recife.
Random Factoid: I was totally obsessed with Brazil during my senior year of college, and quickly became known for it at school. I didn't teach myself Brazilian Portuguese to not ever go back!

11. Who are some of your favorite bloggers and why?

Way before I ever considered blogging, I was a huge fan of Karla's Closet. I remember visiting her blog weekly, looking forward to the next outfit post or mood board she published. I've been following her for years, and love how her style has transformed and evolved throughout that time. She was known for incorporating vintage finds in her wardrobe and somehow modernizing them with her own styling. She has a sexy basics line out now which I adore, called The Line by K; you guys should definitely check it out.

I don't know if this fits in the same category, but I've also been a loyal fan of vlogger / beauty guru, ItsJudyTime. She doesn't have a blog, but she now has a huge YouTube following of at least over 1M people. Even with her huge popularity and celebrity YouTuber status, she's still maintained the same honest, fun, and approachable personality that I gravitated toward originally. If it weren't for her and a few other YouTube beauty gurus, I wouldn't have all the makeup knowledge and know-how that I have now. Thank god I experimented and made all my makeup mistakes in high school, when no one has any recollection of how you looked then.
