I was inspired to approach Mother's Day differently after reading The Minimalists' article regarding gift-giving (read it here). It was simply based on the fact that "many of us give material items to attempt to make up for the time we don’t spend with the people we love" and that many feel obligated to give without thinking twice about WHY we were giving.
